Candidate Rules

  • All candidate submissions require some form of webpage and/or individual hosting of the images and profiles.

  • Pernese Dragon Impression is NOT based on gender or orientation.  Anyone can bond to a gold/bronze etc.

  • All artwork must be properly credited.

  • Quality > Quantity. A brief, well-balanced profile (or stat page) is fine for green/blue/brown impressions. Feel free to use bullet points to summarize as needed.

  • Rares and Gold/Bronze impressions require some sort of story element.

  • No limits on smaller pets, but please no other bonds. (Dragons, whers, etc.)

  • Our sister site DRoP: Legacy has a wealth of lore, which can be reviewed at your leisure here. This is considered flavor text to flesh out our 14th Pass Pern.

  • Don't feel shy about being dramatic with your storytelling. We love tragedy here and welcome big, world-burning plots.

  • Slice of life stories are also cool! This sandbox is big enough for everyone.

  • Characters do NOT have to stay in Alt-Benden, though they are allowed to do so.

  • Dragons come with 8 key personality traits, stats and a name.  Writers can change/elaborate as desired after Impression.

  • Hatchings are conducted via story and (sometimes) via RP.  If you prefer one or the other, please mention in your candidate form.

  • DO NOT COPY/TRACE/REPRODUCE any of the Alt-Benden/DRoP Legacy artwork, even when it is a dragon you have been given.  Using it as a reference for your own drawings or to commission artists for artwork of your characters is acceptable.

  • Please abide by the IC story-line established here in Alt-Benden.  Non-Pernese characters are expected to either use disguises or  magic to cloak their appearance and/or non-human traits and to pretend that they are Pernese outside the protection of Coast Hold.   Instances where this may get ignored/screwed up are inevitable ICly, but please write about how/why and the equally inevitable fallout.

  • Failing to abide by the Vow of Secrecy = major consequences.  The main magic-user in Coast Hold is Mara, a silver Eienic dragon, who specializes in mind magic.  She is responsible for 'fixing' any errors and takes her job quite seriously.  Running afoul of her is like running afoul of a storm cloud.

Legacy Pern Canon Notes

General Setting Notes

  • Only ONE Weyr hosts clutching Queen dragons; the others serve as auxiliary/overflow hatching grounds

    • Alt-Benden is the primary overflow for clutches.  Non-Pernese Dragons host their clutches in secret outside of Coast Hold in a magically heated Cavern.

  • Most dragonriders DO NOT fly against Thread. Only elite Threadfighters do that.

  • Fort Hold is inspired by the size and presence of 1810 London, and is home to over a million people. It is very large and busy, hosting Pernese from all corners of the planet.

  • Industrial resources are more readily available thanks to the dragon-assisted mining of nearby asteroids.

  • AIVAS is canon per 9th Pass books, and deactivated at the end of them. (14 computer terminals with access to the AIVAS archives still exist in Landing, along with a satellite link to the Yokohama)

  • Over time, different sub-cultures have taken root across Pern. More on them here.

  • Felines come in two camps: those who chose to bond with humans, and those who do not. Felinehandlers are not exactly rare, but they are uncommon. More on them here.

  • Mined firestone is sent directly to Fort Weyr and Benden Weyr stockpiles. Nowhere else. They distribute it to other places from there. (Naturally, a black market exists.)

  • Thread, while once eradicated, has managed to stage a comeback.

    • It falls in very, very difficult to predict patterns with wide intervals between individual Falls. Generally, thread Falls 1-2 times per week somewhere on Pern.

    • The Spacer divisions of the Dragon Hall and Star Craft assist the Threadfighters with predicting when and where it will Fall

Dragon specific details

  • Canon colors only: Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue, Green and White.

    • Alt-Benden hosts other colors, but any that cannot pass as one of the traditional six will be cloaked by magic if they choose to explore the rest of Pern.

  • Dragons reached peak programming size, and now all colors vary in size from petite to extra large. More detail here.

  • Dragon peak intelligence is roughly equivalent to an adult human, though individuals vary greatly.

  • Dragon peak memory retention is roughly similar to a human, though the average is still fairly short term.

  • Gold dragons (and to a lesser extent, Bronzes) possess the 'command' imperative of their species, but Weyr hierarchy has been thrown on its head.

  • Only White dragons possess the ability to always know 'when' they are in time. Individual results may vary.

  • Greens are chased by males of all colors (according to their preference). They do not produce eggs.

    • Alt-Benden green and green-size rares can produce eggs. Mothers are cloaked to resemble golds to regular Pernese visitors or lay their eggs in the Coast Hold Hatching Cavern.

  • Golds are chased by males of all colors (according to their preference), with most being caught by bronzes, some browns and the rare blue. There is no stigma attached to a brown or blue winning; only remarks regarding it as 'uncommon.' Smaller clutches do result from those pairings.

  • All riders are taught how to control their dragons in the event of being caught in Threadfall without firestone. Deaths from this are rare.

  • Most dragon deaths are a result of their rider being killed, primarily as members of the guard.

Wher Specific Details

  • Whers CANNOT fly or use firestone

  • Whers come in several 'breeds' that have drastic differences and abilities between them. More on that here.

  • The 'Wher Hall' is currently in the process of being acknowledged as a Craft Hall like the Smith Hall or Dragon Hall. Most wherhandlers are split on whether or not it's a good idea.

  • Wher color does not determine size. Pedigree and breed type does.
